4 Must Visit Mountain Villages in Naxos. Greece.
4 MOUNTAIN VILLAGES IN NAXOS
Want more from your visit to Naxos than what the old town, it’s boutiques and sandy shorelines with turquoise waters has to offer? Perfect, then swap that Icy Spritz for a set keys because we have the perfect day trip itinerary for you that will take you to some amazing hillside villages. You can either hire a scooter or bike (if you hold the equivalent license), a quad if that’s your adventure style or travel in a little more comfort and hire a small car like we did. We managed to get ours for a little over €20 per day ($32 AUD) which is a decent price coming out of their high season. P.S. they’re asking for international drivers permits more these days so make sure you organise that before you leave home!
The driving time between each village are as follows:
1. Naxos Port (Chora) to Chalkio – 29 minutes.
2. Chalkio to Filoti – 5 minutes
3. Filoti to Apeiranthos – 13 minutes
4. Apeiranthos to Koronos – 17 minutes

If a small hillside village with Benzantine history interests you then you may like this town. If the aesthetics of the white walled laneways and colourful bursts from the flowers sound inviting then this village could be for you. And if local liquor tastings that come in 3 strengths, colours and aromatics interest you then make your way to Chalkio.

TIME REQUIRED: 1 hour.
One of the great things about Naxos is that within half an hour from the sea side you can be eating brunch and exploring the small cobblestone pathed streets of a village with a completely different vibe than the one you left. If you want to meet and talk to some friendly locals then we suggest you head directly to Theos traditional shop and have a chat with them. You may not understand each other much but you will enjoy the exchange.
LOCATION: 13 mins from Filoti | 43 mins from Naxos Port | Open in Google Maps
TIME REQUIRED: 2-3 hours
Being one of the biggest mountain villages of Naxos, Apeiranthos provides a million opportunities for those that like to spend their day getting lost in the narrow laneways. You’ll also be spoilt for choice here when deciding where to eat with some places offering incredible views out over the surrounding mountain side and others offering a more intimate setting tucked away in private courtyards.
4. Honourable Mention: Koronos
LOCATION:17 mins from Apeiranthos | 51 mins from Naxos Port | Open in Google Maps
TIME REQUIRED: 1-2 hours.
Whilst we ran out of time to explore Koronos we did make it to the top of the hill. From here we could see over one half of the settlement perched in amongst a very dramatic cliff side. Be warned, most areas are accessed by foot only and there are heeeaapppss of stairs! But don’t let that scare you because that’s where the real gems are hiding. So make sure you manage your time a little better than we did so you can find them all!
And there we have a four-village, one-day itinerary exploring Naxos!
You could even organise it so that you’re having a meal at each one too… because where we come from, brunch is a totally legitimate meal!
