TEGALLALANG RICE TERRACE
As told by Zade Grilloni
We had seen many images and videos of what looked like a quiet, natural beauty. Unfortunately, this isn’t exactly what Tegallalang is becoming. While the beauty is still under the touristy make up, if your after an authentic glimpse of Indonesian or Balinese culture this probably isn’t the place to visit. In fact it seemed like one big tourist theme park. There’s nothing wrong with capturing the beauty of places you visit but unfortunately i couldn’t stop imagining what the rice terrace looked like before the giant swings and big photo backdrops came in.
Its quite clear Tegallalang has become a popular spot for locals to make money off tourists which is arguably fair i guess. The locals have to make a living too, completely understandable. Being stopped every 100 meters with a local demanding a donation of 10k and blocking your path before you pay, in our opinion.. was a little ridiculous. After reaching 3 corners with the same donation scheme, we had enough. It was more of a hostile environment than peaceful which takes away from the natural beauty around you.
It didn’t help that we had just come from northern Bali in the Munduk area and came across many beautiful rice terrace’s that don’t have the tourist scam attached. Aside from the negatives, Tegallalang is a beautiful spot and if you don’t mind paying maybe 45,000 Rp all up to explore the terrace then go for it!
